BOOK COVER
Fanfic book cover design Student Project 2024
This project was completed for my college Publication class and offered a unique opportunity to blend imagination with design skills. The assignment was to create a fanfiction publication based on a real book we had read. I chose Sky in the Deep, a young adult novel centered around a Viking clan rivalry, where the protagonist discovers her long-lost brother fighting for the enemy. For my fanfic, I focused on the untold story of the brother during the five years he was missing—a perspective not explored in the original novel. I aimed to create a cover that would resonate with the young adult fantasy audience while maintaining a mature and compelling tone. I selected illustrated imagery to appeal to a younger demographic without veering into a childlike aesthetic. The chosen illustration captures the tone and narrative of the story, aligning well with the fantasy genre. For typography, I used a font reminiscent of old script—evoking a sense of history and tradition—while keeping it clear and readable. The color palette of black, brown, and beige was carefully chosen to create a cohesive, earthy look that blends seamlessly with the cover design and reflects the rugged Viking setting. This project allowed me to explore storytelling through design in a new way, pushing me to think creatively and refine my visual communication skills.
